Journey of Hope Page
Journey of Hope is the National Outreach Program of PUSH America and Pi Kappa Phi
Since 1988, Pi Kappa Phi undergraduates from colleges and universities nationwide have cycled coast to coast on behalf of people with disabilities. This summer, the sixty man Journey of Hope team is cycling more than 3,500 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the steps of our nation's Capitol. My name is Bryan Luce and I will be cycling with the Journey of Hope. My Dad will be updating this page with information about the ride.

US Map -- North Team Route for the 1997 Journey of HopeTake a virtual ride with the North Team on their 3,500 mile trek across America. Follow along on route maps and experience with them the sights as they cycle coast to coast. Learn what's special about the more than fifty cities and towns they will visit. The real story of the Journey of Hope is the impact that the team has in the communities they visit. After riding an average of 75 miles each day, the team members make it a priority to share their experiences with those for whom they're riding. And an educational puppet show called "Kids on the Block" that the team performs at schools, shopping centers and other gatherings along the route helps children of all ages gain a better understanding of what it might be like to have a disability.
The 1997 Journey of Hope is made up of two teams of 30 riders each plus support crew. After cycling the first week together across California and into Nevada, the teams divide in Fallon, Nevada to cycle two routes across America. One team takes a northern route, the other a southern one. I am cycling with the north team.
History of the Journey of Hope -
In 1987, a Pi Kapp Alumni from Stetson University, Bruce Rodgers, trekked from Florence, Oregon to Yorktown, Virginia to raise awareness for PUSH America. His solo ride inspired PUSH America to adopt this "Ride Across America" to promote awareness for severely disabled children. This program has gained national media attention and financial backing from some of America's Fortune 500 companies over the past eight years.
Here is a list of those people and organizations who are sponsoring my ride. Each team member has raised a minimum of $4,000 through personal sponsorships in order to ride the Journey of Hope. This year, PUSH America will receive more than $300,000 from these donations as well as corporate sponsorships, enabling PUSH to promote awareness and understanding of people with disabilities.
PUSH America -
Funds raised through the Journey of Hope benefit the projects and programs of PUSH America including Give-A-PUSH Weekend and PUSH Camp. Selected as the national philanthropic service of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at the 37th Supreme Chapter, PUSH America has raised more than $3,000,000 for education about and service to persons with disabilities.
The Mission Statement of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity:
The expression of shared values and ideals as contained in
the Ritual of Initiation, Supreme Law and Fraternity policy;
The pursuit of brotherhood through scholarship, leadership,
service and social experiences;
The achievement of personal excellence in each member
and collective excellence in our Fraternity;
A lifelong brotherhood of its members.![]()
