WENOCA Group * General Information

About the WENOCA Group

The Western North Carolina (WENOCA) Group of the Sierra Club is a regional group of the NC Chapter of the Sierra Club. Founded in 1972, the Group in governed by a 7 member executive committee elected by the membership. The WENOCA Group and the National Sierra Club are the same 501 C (4) non-profit legal entity. The local WENOCA Group is empowered to speak on behalf of the entire Sierra Club on issues that fall wholly within the Group's geographic jurisdiction. The Sierra Club engages in the full range of electoral politics allowed by law. Because the Club has registered political action committees at the federal and state level, the WENOCA Group is able to make political endorsements at every level of government within its political boundaries, from US Congress to local county commissioner races.

The WENOCA Group currently covers all counties west of Buncombe County except for Henderson and Transylvania. The WENOCA Group has no paid staff and is totally volunteer. Other regional Sierra Groups in WNC are the Pinnacle Group, based in Henderson County, and the Pisgah Group in Transylvania County.
