Slow Food Fundraiser - Gourmet Dinner & Silent Auction

18 Sep 2010

Slow Food Asheville's September 18 "Mountain Fire" fundraiser will support eight WNC food producers traveling to Terra Madre, the international Slow Food conference in Italy, this October.

WNC’s Terra Madre delegates will be able to garner a wealth of knowledge at the conference, which they will return to WNC to improve their own businesses as well as use to help their communities eat more sustainably and preserve local food cultures. For more information about the WNC delegates going to Terra Madre, please visit:

Slow Food is a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members around the world that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment.

The "Mountain Fire" fundraiser will feature a dinner of local, home-grown, scratch-made items. Guest chef, Mark Rosenstein (founder of The Market Place restaurant) is graciously donating his expertise and vision to what promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime gourmet event. View the full menu at:

Prior to dinner, from 3-5pm, there will be fresh cider made on an antique cider press, farm tours, as well as a preview of the silent auction items -- a fine selection of local crafts and services. Auction bidding will be open from 5-7:30pm and dinner will be served at 5:30pm.

Fundraiser tickets may be purchased online at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/125156
$45/adults, child 10 or under free with adult purchase.

Each delegate's business is donating time and materials to make this an event to remember and to support the Slow Food philosophy -- preservation of regional food cultures and eating closer to the source of food production.

Sunswept Farm Conservancy has donated use of their farm and facilities to be the event venue as well as a whole Berkshire pig and two dozen chickens, all natural and pasture raised. Mountain Harvest Organics will contribute a cornucopia of organic veggies and floral decor. Farm and Sparrow Bakery will furnish whole grain, wood-fired breads and make rustic apple tarts. Elk Mountain Farm and Gardens is supplying all the apples for cider, sauce, and tarts plus a variety of wild berries for dipping sauces. BEe Healing Apiary's mountain honey will infuse ice cream and is providing scratch-made cannoli. Jewel of the Blue Ridge is organizing the silent auction.

Live music for the "Mountain Fire" fundraiser will be provided by The Shinola Troubadours of Possum Splendor and CaroMia. Listen to a sampling of these great musicians' work at:
