Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society

Welcome to the Asheville Area's own chapter of the Audubon Society. If you live in this area, we hope you'll join us, and if you don't we hope you enjoy your stay.

Welcome ...

to the Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society (EMAS), a chapter of the National Audubon Society serving Buncombe and Henderson Counties.

You may be aware of us through a birding outing, a field trip, our Audubon Adventures school program, the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary, or our work to protect our region's natural resources.

But EMAS is much more ...

The fun begins ... Take a hike ...

Membership in EMAS includes your membership in the National Audubon Society. As a member you'll receive:

  • The National Audubon Society's award-winning Audubon magazine.

  • The highly informative Raven's Nest newsletter, which keeps you in touch with all local Audubon activities.

  • First consideration for all local Audubon field trips and activities.

  • Access to nature trips, programs, and summer camps run by the National Audubon Society.

Most important, you'll become part of a committed group of individuals in Buncombe and Henderson Counties who are willing to take a stand to support the unique natural resources of our mountain region.

EMAS members take pride in two on-going projects. These areas not only provide outstanding recreational opportunities for nature enthusiasts, but also preserve critical habitat for the area's flora and fauna.

Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary
EMAS is responsible for this 8-acre wetland sanctuary in north Asheville. In 1988, after raising over $400,000, we acquired the property to protect it from commercial development. Improvements have been added including a gazebo, pond and boardwalk.

Mt. Mitchell State Park
EMAS is especially supportive of conservation and educational efforts on Mt. Mitchell. We have been instrumental in securing grants for signs, trail maintenance, and a special trail for the visually impaired.

Please step forward ...

Many members take an active role in conserving our unique natural resources by serving on one of the ten standing committees that carry out EMAS goals. If you have specific skills or just plain energy to offer, please step forward and help...
