Upon moving to North Carolina from another state, you must register your motor vehicle within 30 days.  Out-of-state residents moving to North Carolina should obtain a North Carolina driver's license prior to registering a vehicle.

To register your motor vehicle, you must furnish the Department of Motor Vehicle the title (unless title is in the possession of a lien holder) and a valid registration card from the state of prior registration. The local tag and registration office is located at the Kloset Flowers & DMV Shop on South Main Street in Robbinsville.

Drivers License

All new residents must obtain a driver's license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence.  All new residents must take a written, road sign and vision test, so be sure to obtain your free traffic rules booklet.

The Department of Motor Vehicle van is parked at the Department of Social Services office on Knight Street on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for drivers license applicants.  You will need to surrender your out-of-state license, show proof of insurance and proof of residency, such as a preprinted utility bill with your local address.

Fifteen-year-olds can get a learner's permit, provided they have completed a drivers training course.  Those under 18 get a provisional license that restricts unsupervised driving hours.
