FAMILY:
Heath Family (Ericaceae)

DESCRIPTION:
A medium-sized shrub, usually 3 feet, at least in the mountains. Leaves are elliptic, and minutely toothed or not at all. The flowers are urn-shaped, mostly white, but varying from pinkish to greenish. The berries are recognizable by their 5 pointed belly-button. The twigs are slender and zig-zaggy.

FLOWERS:
March to May (Berries Late July to September)

HABITAT:
Prefers acidy soil. Grows in woodland borders, in high tundra-like areas, upland bogs and barrens, and thickets.

 

OTHER INFORMATION:
This is an indicator species for Oak-Hickory forests.

Cultivated blueberries are derived from this plant. Also has sometimes spectacular fall foliage. A great stand of these blueberries are in the area of Craggy Gardens, and attract a great deal of wildlife - birds and deer and bear. Deer and rabbits even munch on the tender foliage.
