About Us |
| |
| |
The What: |
| |
| |
Partners Unlimited
targets at risk youth between the ages of 10 and 18. Some of the youth
have already experienced the penal system; some have never committed a
crime, but may have "bad attitudes". Youth referrals come from the
courts, other nonprofits, schools and parents. Any troubled child is
welcome. |
| |
| |
The Why: |
| |
| |
Partners Unlimited feels
there is an urgent, worldwide need for communication among youth,
parents and society. The organization believes that this lack of
communication is at the root of many serious social problems, and so has
determined to address the problem locally. |

| |
The How: |
| |
| |
|
|
Partners Unlimited is a
unique program in that it works with youth AND their families to build
strong communication links and build the basic bonds of trust. It does
this through its volunteers who are dedicated to establishing a
communication link between parents and child, and ensuring they both
receive the resources they need. |
| |
|
|
| |
|
|
To help it accomplish its
goals, the organization offers these additional support services: |

The Volunteers: |
| |
| |
|
|
Volunteers are the
backbone of the organization. Most serve as a direct link between
children and parents, and are committed to helping both. |
|
| |
|
|
The volunteers are drawn mostly from local
colleges, universities and churches. Each volunteer spends at least
three hours per week, for nine to twelve months, with a Partners
Unlimited youth and/or the youth’s family. |
| |
| |
|
|
What does it take to be a volunteer? The
same thing it takes to be a reliable, trustworthy friend. Shared
volunteer/youth activities might include seeing a movie, going for a
hike, or having dinner. Because these volunteers’ roles are so critical,
they are subject to extensive background checks. They must provide three
references to Partners Unlimited, and explain to the board why they wish
to volunteer. |

| |
|
|
Volunteers are also needed to help with
tutoring, operate the children’s hotline, serve as facilitators for the
parent support group, and aid in the restoration and placement of used
computers. Other needs include fund raising, public relations, clerical
duties, networking and researching. |
| |
|
| |
The Finance: |
| |
| |
|
|
Partners Unlimited
generates revenue through fundraising. It also solicits donations of
money, time, food and services, and applies for grants. |
| |
|
| |
The Future: |
| |
| |
|
Eventually, Partners
Unlimited would like to be a self-sufficient entity that does not rely
on grants. The organization would like to develop a business, utilizing
its youth participants, that would generate the program’s revenue. |
