Our goal is to advance international awareness and foster Western North Carolina's global ties.  We are committed to:
  • Promoting international awareness and global understanding among the people of Western North Carolina in order to encourage a more active and effective participation in national policy debates
  • Providing a fall and spring World Affairs lecture series in Asheville, NC:  guest lecturers of national and global repute, speaking on topics of current urgency in world affairs
  • Providing a winter Great Decisions lecture series in four Western NC locations, affording an overview of issues such as:
               °  international terrorism
               °  regional conflicts
               °  health and environment

We sponsor a competition among local high schools on international events and issues called Academic WorldQuest.  The winner of the competition is sent to Washington D.C. to represent our Council and Western North Carolina at the national competition.

Click on Membership to view membership options and obtain an application.  Non-members may attend individual lectures for a fee of $10 per lecture.  Full-time students are admitted free of charge.  

We are an independent, non-profit, 501.c.3, organization.  Membership dues do not cover expenses for guest speakers and we rely on contributions from members and friends.  Click on Contributions to see how you can help.

We develop our programs in close cooperation with the UNCA Political Science Department and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville.  We also work with other like-minded Western NC and national organizations, including:
 
Through membership in the World Affairs Councils of America, we are actively involved with other councils in the region and the nation.
