How to place a counter on your web page.

If you are reading this, you are at http://main.nc.us/counter/
There are two files in the directory, /home/httpd/html/counter/ beside the file you are currently reading (index.html) on main.nc.us. They are home_counter.cgi and home_hits.txt

Copy both of these files to your web directory, eg., /home/httpd/html/my_project/
You must use these files on mainsrv.main.nc.us. The other servers are not configured to handle this script.
While you are connected to main.nc.us via telnet, go to "your web directory".
Issue the following commands:
"chmod 777 home_hits.txt"
"chmod 755 home_counter.cgi"
Then, add the following code to your web page in the same directory:

<FONT SIZE=4><P ALIGN=CENTER> <IMG SRC="home_counter.cgi" ALT="Sorry, graphical browsers only."> visits since 10/27/96.</P></FONT>

Just change the date to today's date.

Then, type "pico home_hits.txt"
Reset the number to "0000001". It must have seven digits.
Type "^x", "y", then press ENTER.

That's all there is to it. The next time you access your page, the counter will be active. You may need to press the reload button to see the effects.
